Compare the whole cost of a placement
Ask for rent, any bond or deposit, utilities, meals, laundry, internet and transport charges separately. Find out what is included, what is optional and who receives each payment. Compare the total with likely hours and gross pay rather than assuming the advertised hourly rate will cover everything.
Ask what happens during a weather interruption or a week with fewer shifts. Clarify whether charges continue after the assignment ends and what notice you must give to leave. Keep a buffer for food, travel and an alternative place to stay.

Know the address and the agreement
Confirm the exact address, who manages the property, room-sharing arrangements, cooking facilities, locks, bathrooms, heating or cooling, and access to shops. Request recent photos and written booking or accommodation terms from a checked contact.
A private tenancy, hostel booking, boarding arrangement and employer-supplied room can have different legal treatment. Do not assume that a single bond rule applies to every arrangement in every state. Ask the state tenancy authority about the type of agreement before paying a deposit.

When accommodation comes out of pay
Fair Work says deductions need a permitted basis, such as an applicable law, order, award, agreement or qualifying written authorisation. Some employer-benefit deductions have no effect if they are unreasonable, even where an agreement appears to allow them.
Request a written itemisation and compare it with the payslip. A signature does not waive workplace protections. Keep the agreement, receipts and any messages changing the cost, then contact Fair Work if a deduction appears incorrect.

Check every shift, not just the first day
Get the worksite address, collection point, pickup time, travel duration and return arrangement. Ask whether the shuttle operates for early starts, weekends and late shifts, and whether the charge is per trip, day or week. Confirm what happens if you miss it or the worksite changes.
If you need your own car, plan fuel, legal driving requirements, road conditions and parking before choosing accommodation. A regional town can be far from an orchard even when both use the same town name.
A practical pre-payment checklist
- Checked accommodation provider and exact address.
- Written price, deposit terms and cancellation conditions.
- Room-sharing and cooking facilities confirmed.
- Worksite and travel arrangement confirmed for the roster.
- All payroll deductions explained separately.
- A way to leave safely if the placement changes.
Keep the housing agreement separate from a fee for getting a job. Read the scam guide before sending money to an unfamiliar contact.

Common questions
Is accommodation automatically free when a job says it is provided?
No. “Provided” can mean available at a cost. Confirm the amount, inclusions and deductions in writing.
Can every employer deduct rent just because I signed a form?
No. The deduction must have a permitted basis and meet the applicable rules, including restrictions on unreasonable employer-benefit deductions.
